In The Boom Boom Room

...Sometimes a play leaves you thinking and sometimes merely entertained, but Belltown Theatre Center's current production of David Rabe's brutally poetic play, In The Boom Boom Room, had me gripping my seat, I could not move and I could not breathe.

I have to admit, if I have any sense of integrity as a reporter left in me, that my hardened theatre critics heart was pierced in a way that still has me reeling. This has to be due to the combination of the provocative world of the Boom Boom Room and the vivid life being lived on stage by an exquisite ensemble of some of Seattle’s finest actors. Under Larry Silverberg’s seamless and inventive direction, and with a cast so real I forgot I was at an evening of theater, this story of an abused young woman, “Chrissy,” trying to scratch and crawl her way towards realizing her dream of becoming a “true dancer,” offers no easy answers. It is a tough, relentless evening of theatre with images and sounds that will not soon fade.

...Attempting a play as funny as it is disturbing is a most difficult endeavor. Director, Silverberg pulls it off with the consistently superb performances of Lauren Hendler as Chrissy, J. Lawrason Driscoll as Harold, Teri Mathews as Susan, David Matis as Guy, Scott Jackson as Eric, Josh Coberly as Ralphie, John Marengo as Al, and Susan Mullen as Helen. In addition, the electric tri-level set by Regan MacStravic and the pumping sounds of the seventies, add up to a theatrical event not to be missed."
