Our Berlin Group!

Larry Silverberg (USA) / “True Acting - The Meisner Approach“
Lecture : 3.8. 2007, 6pm – 9pm
Workshop: 4. – 6.8. 2007, 10am – 5pm

Meisner Technique, long known as the best kept secret in American acting, has become established in Britain, but is still rather unknown here. Sanford Meisner, one of the founders of the legendary Group Theater, created an original approach to acting that is completely rooted in the actor´s instinct and enhances spontaneity and truthfulness in expression and partner relationship.

Larry Silverberg studied with Sanford Meisner himself and is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher of his technique. He is a widely published actor / acting teacher in the world today and he is considered a foremost authority on the Sanford Meisner technique of acting through his internationally acclaimed four volume series, “The Sanford Meisner Approach: An Actors Workbook,” and his book, “Loving To Audition.” These workbooks are dealing with the actor´s challenge and support towards a lively and truthful performance, by the means of Meisner Technique. He´s also the author of „The Actor's Guide to Qualified Acting Coaches“ and „The 7 Simple Truths of Acting“.

This workshop is a master class in the craft of „true acting“, introducing Meisner Technique. The actors will be led through a series of many exercises to learn various skills and values of the craft. The objective is to enable the actors to be alive in an authentic, simple and passionate performance.

The basic exercise of Meisner Technique is repetition, a radical training of observation, perception, real experience and behaviour in contact with the partner. Prepared elements are added, the immediate reality always having priority to prepared inner work. Meisner Technique is distinguished from more introverting approaches, giving absolute priority to the reality of doing in the moment. This creates space for creativity and improvisation in the actors´s collaboration.

Larry Silverberg stresses that the craft of acting, ultimately, must unite us with the greater truths of life and living. As actors, we must answer the continual invitation to have our hearts and minds stirred, moved, awakened. In this sense, Larry Silverberg is an inspiring teacher.

Issues Larry Silverberg wants to deal with: effortless listening as the key to deeper availability, or as I call it, "listening with the ear of one's heart“. Bringing the actors humanity to everything they do - empowering the actors expression of their authentic point of view. Getting the actor out of their head and back to their natural, organic impulses.Rrelease from the internal critic and freeing the spontaneous self. Deepening the actor's access to their own emotional instrument in a healthy and organic manner. The reality of doing as the foundation for bringing vivid life to the actors work on stage or in front of the camera. The difference between acting as an art of "knowing" rather than one of "showing". Dealing with text as an actor and making choices that incite your imagination and compel you to take action. The participants will get assignments to prepare for exercise and for scene work.

For his lecture demonstration Larry Silverberg has chosen the title „The "Heart of Great Acting“ and the Meisner Approach". He will introduce his approach to Meisner Technique and demonstrate it with four actors who have no experience with this approach.

(Unfortunatley, we lost most of our class photos. So here are the few we have and a few shots of Berlin...)
